Summer Has Landed

With the fabulous weather this weekend there is a dire need to be outdoors. This Sunday is the perfect excuse for being outside, getting some fresh air, and picking up some great crafts. Ravenswing - Ottawa's DIY Fair is this Sunday May 27 from 11am-4pm. Located in Minto Park (Elgin and Gilmour), it's the perfect setting - downtown, yet far enough from the tall buildings.

And tune into CHUO.fm (89.1 fm) for an interview about Ravenswing tomorrow (WED!) between 5-6pm. Yours truly will be there with Sean, the co-ordinator, and another vendor. Set your radio!

Spring at DFAIT

Bez appeared at another craft fair showcasing the wares of foreign service staff or their spouses. It was a busy two days and after many appearances people seem to look forward to our goodies. The amount of baked goods increases with every show and items continue to sell out, faster each time.

There were the usual goodies such as the brownies, banana loaf and cranberry loaf. The coordinator and I were both shocked when all 20 (yes, twenty!) loaves sold out by 10am. Unbelievable! People were also very hungry for the black current and white chocolate scones and raspberry almond cake that made another appearance after Handmade Harvest. DFAIT employees didn’t just want these to accompany their morning coffee, but for their breakfast too.

Wednesday night was a busy one with more baking for day two. Scones and a maple walnut tart went into the oven. Without any overripe bananas in the central west-end, lemon poppyseed was the prime loaf. Something with blueberry was in mind and thanks to the suggestion of a DFAIT customer, the blueberry orange loaves were very popular. Who would have thought? Again, both sold very quickly.

Another experiment was a bacon maple scone. They didn’t go as fast as the black current, but the ‘regular’ resident celiacs gave them a try and willingly gave their feedback. While delicious, they needed more maple syrup and of course, more bacon (noted). Bacon is one of the latest things in baking and I’m sure these little ones won’t disappear, but they need some more tweaking.

It was wonderful to see people return later in the day and the following day; repeat customers are satisfied customers. It was humbling to hear people say they were happy I was there again. It made me smile from ear to ear when someone’s colleague said ‘Oh, so-and-so had that and they loved it. I’d like one too’. And of course, there was a sense of appreciation from both celiacs and myself when they said ‘I can have something with my coffee today! Yea!’.

Plans are being made for their next show (already!) in December.

Handmade Harvest – Spring Edition

Last Saturday was Handmade Harvest in nearby Almonte. This lovely town loves its artisans and Colleen and Emily do such a great job promoting them with this bi-annual craft fair. After selling out so early last spring, ample goodies were baked in preparation. But of course, certain items always sell out quickly and with the busy crowd, Saturday was no exception. By 11am (Yes, 1 hour after opening!) our supply was cut in half!! Amazed, surprised, but also so thankful that people were happy to see us return we were more than happy to have them purchase our goodies.

Our usual loaves and brownies were there along with some tasty black current and white chocolate scones. They have become quite the hit and so much so that they may become a regular at our table (a big thank you to Amber Campbell Photography for the photo).

Another big hit were the Pina Colada Cupcakes. Thanks to a customer’s custom order for a birthday cake, we were inspired for a cupcake to help ring in spring (going to Handmade Harvest in May is also a sure-fire way of doing that too). The two cheerful women next door at My Stow-n-Tow loved them and quickly had a craving for the sweet beverage (what a compliment!).

A Raspberry Almond Cake also made its first appearance. It was in demand once coffee time rolled around and continued well into the afternoon. The ground almonds add a wonderful nutty flavour while the raspberries give you a burst of fruit. Keep an eye out for this one as it’s the perfect accompaniment for a tea party or coffee-time with family or friends.

Another big hit was a Pecan Maple Tart. A nice shortbread crust with toasted pecans and a gooey maple filling. Similar to a buttertart, but not as sweet, and better.

Only a few cupcakes returned home and Sam’s husband was more than happy to see them.

Maple Syrup Season

Spring is officially here – April has arrived and maple syrup is available. While the sap was running in March we were busy trying out some tasty goodies, and not just any regular goodies; ones with maple syrup.

There is nothing like maple syrup. And when we say ‘maple syrup’, we mean the real deal. A cousin was readying his pails and lines as temperatures began to rise and was busy boiling the sap to make delicious syrup. We were lucky once again this year to be able to purchase some ‘family-made’ syrup and have been putting it into some delicious baked goods.
